Top portion of whip, showing capacity
hat
The whip support consists of a bamboo stick, 6 feet (183 cm.)
long, purchased from the local building supply store at 6 for $2.50.
The conductor is number 14 bare copper, which had been purchased for a
different project. The capacity hat was made from copper wire scraps
left over from the installation of a ceiling fan in our dining room,
the size of the hat being determined by the length of the scraps. I
added the hat because, with an antenna shorter than a quarter wave,
more capacity equals more antenna current, and more antenna current
equals more signal.
